Hello everyone,

New to the forum, so hopefully I am posting this in the proper section.

I recently purchased an all original 1969 390 AMC Javelin SST painted in the original big bad blue color. This is a pretty rare care, and it needs some body work, primarily above the rear wheel wells where there is a considerable amount of rust. I am going to end up getting the entire car repainted and all of the body fixed sometime in 2019.

My question is this...  I pulled up the carpet last week, and found what look to be decent floors minus the dirt and surface rust accumulated over the years (I pulled out about 5 dead rats when I cleaned out the car). What should I do about this surface rust? Should I remove it all and primer/paint it in a black color to protect it, or should I just wait and have the pros handle it when they repaint the car the original blue? I obviously want to protect the floor of the car from further rust, but I also don't want to do something stupid and devalue the car, as this vehicle seems to be completely original. Any thoughts on this as you will not even see the paint when the floors are covered with carpet later on?

Unless you are going for a concourse trophy, you can save some money if you clean, and refinish the floor yourself.  There are lots of good products our there but I recommend wire wheeling or sanding the floors after you get rid of the dirt and then coating them with Eastwood Rust Enscapulator Primer topped they a paint of your choice or instead use POR-15 coating.  Joe

I found similar surface rust in places on the inside floor of the original Playmate Pink '69 AMX that I restored. Since I wanted to retain as much of the factory original paint as possible, I first cleaned the floor with Prep-sol, then used CLEAR POR15 paint wherever there was surface rust. It left these areas shinier but you could still see the original paint through it, and there is no better protection from future rusting should these areas ever get wet again.

Thank you both for the quick responses. I think I am going to go with your advice and clean and then paint with clear POR 15. It would feel too bad to take a wire wheel to that original paint.

There is another method to completely remove rust, especially the floor.
Vacuum all the loose stuff, take a rag and soak it in vinegar, lay it on the rust spot, cover with wax paper and let it sit for a couple of days.
Rinse off and dry the now bare metal, prime immediately. If there is still rust, then repeat.
Seen a whole car done like this to strip rust - works quite well.

? What about the Road Kill method ?, get the empty shell outside and Pressure Wash the inside out ?
And I like the sound of the vinegar and rag method after the thorough "bath"...

There are so many different methods of rust removal without damaging the parent metal. Using abrasive grinders is the worst method as it just thins the metal further.  Rotary Wire brushes just sling the crap all over everywhere.   PHIX is phosphoric acid based and seems to work well for me.
I'll use some coarse wet/dry sand paper to help it along, and follow the instructions.

There are a myriad dozens of other chemical methods of rust removal, Try one until you find one that works for you.

The curious part to me is you're willing to repaint the entire exterior, but hesitant to repaint the interior? Go for it !  Just get rid of the rust, patch the metal where needed, etch it with PHIX, rinse it with acetone and prime it with epoxy primers and seal it with body color paint.  If you do the work yourself you can buy the air compressor, the spray gun, the breathing mask and anything else you need and have money left over versus paying some one. Like you said the floor gets covered, doesn't matter if there's a run or two in the paint. The exterior is a bit different.
