A friend has a 67 Rebel wagon with a 258 and 4 speed. The 258 has bit the dust. I have a 1982 Concord DL Wagon. 258, automatic. He wants the 258 out of the 1982 Concord but not the auto transmission. Will just engine swap be that, just engine swap. Do we have to worry about the cranks being different because of auto trans/manual trans.

71 was the only yr. that the 258 had a flat flange crank.

I don't know what a "flat flange" crank means. Is 71 the only year to worry about.
I know this same question has been brought up about the 195.6 andvhave been stated that basically a (without have to pretty much rebuild the engine do to which crank it has) manual engine or a automatic engine. I also know that with newer cars, it seems to matter. Not trying to be a smart @$$ by saying something about flat/tapered/concave, etc flange, doesn't really help in my quest. I've limited mechanical knowledge and haven't ever done a AMC engine swap. I know the 258 didn't grow in the Rebel wagon. When he got it, it had already been changed over. |

Yes, it's that wagon. I don't know what Yeager 258/4 speed thats in it. Figured all 258's starters would be on the same side. He's wanting the 258 from my 82 Concord wagon. It's an automatic. Thought I heard that auto transmission had different crank than manual. So if it's not gonna be an "easy" fix I want him to know. Dont think the guy who has the wagon wants to really go any other route than easy/cheap. Understandable. So since I don't know for sure, I figured I'd ask. Thanks Tom

You just need to keep the flywheel that's on the engine in the car now.
AMC 6's are internally ballanced, so the flywheel/flexplates are neutral balanced. If it's a 258 and 4 speed, it has to be a 72 or newer engine, with the starter on the passenger side. Or somebody went to a lot of trouble to adapt a 4 speed to the rare late 70-71 258.

If you know for sure you have a 258, I don't think you will have a problem. As noted, if you have a 71 258 the starter will be on the left (driver's) side. 72 and later have the starter on the right (passenger) side. All 72+ trannys interchange.

The engine is a 1980 and the 4spd is too they are originally out of my blue AMX. The 82 engine will fit. It still have the 4bbl and headers? And yes it's a 258. The car originally had a 232 3 on the tree. (T96)

I figured you'd know more about it than me. He's going to put all the 4 barrel stuff on it. I just wanted to make sure it would be as "easy" as possible. I'm sure Al isn't getting squat for all this so I understand why the least work as possible is one of the goals. So it sounds like it'll be all good and I'll get get learn some more stuff. Thanks for the help
