Here's how I found it in a yard two weeks ago, riding low in the back due to two flat rear tires, four cylinder heads in the trunk and a cockpit full of spares, including a spare door!  Last registered in '95.

This won't be a rotisserie restore (EDIT: That plan changed, as you will see) but it will be repainted top to bottom.  All glass, doors and fenders will be removed for the repaint, the entire interior (except the dash) is being replaced and Dan Curtis at AMC Muscle Cars will be doing a rebuild of the original 390.

I gutted the interior yesterday (along with several years worth of rat turds) and today we started sanding.

Fortunately, the rust was pretty minimal.  A little in the driver's side rear corner of the trunk where the rear valance panel and quarter-panel meet, some over the driver's side rear tire and a little you can see in the passenger's seat trough (top side only... from rat p**s maybe?).   Doors and rockers and the rest of the floor all looked great!

The engine, tranny and glass are coming out soon.

I have documentation placing this car in Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming for most of its life, so it's a wonder that it wasn't a rust bucket!

Well, everything is off the car now except the doors and the dash.  Doors will be removed for painting, but planning to keep the dash intact.  That could change if I decide to add A/C.

While my paint and body guy works on the body, I've been media blasting & painting brackets, getting calipers and brake booster etc. rebuilt and things like taillight housings rechromed.  New leaf springs have been made as the old ones were deemed too pitted. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but you don't realize how many brackets, etc. there are on a car until you have to blast, prime and paint each one!

I've finished restoring the Rally 500s with the AMARK paint kit, and they turned out really nicely.

Dan Curtis' AMC Muscle Cars in Phoenix is rebuilding the 390 for me, and it should be done in the next couple weeks.  I just scored an Edelbrock Performer for it yesterday (temp valve covers in photo)

We plan to have the car done in July (we all know how that goes though, haha) and that should give me a few months to finish up details before our first show, at Las Vegas in November.

I've been in touch with the lady (now in her seventies) who owned the car from 1987 until recently.  I commented on the fact that there was very little rust considering she lives in Jackson, Wyoming.  She said she never drove the car in the snow because it was too powerful!  Very wise... and it's saving us a ton of work now.
