I go where ever the "old farts work",  because they no how to open a book  when the computer dead ends.  Here in my home town there isn't a Napa for 40 miles.... we have oreillys, autozone, advanced, bumper to bumper, and carquest....  and carquest and bumper to bumper is where the old dudes work.  I may pay a little more at the two but at least you know your walking out the door with the right parts.  But after 5pm and or on a Sunday, oreillys is the best choice at least up here.   I laugh when I hear people going to Autozone.... now im not sexiest but the autozone here in town has a 95% staff of women.....  now, I went into the zone looking for a shock for my jeep, I made it so easy for the girl, I had the collapsed length and extended lengh written down along with the type of ends the shock had on it..... and what does the women bring me back??????   struts for the hood of a car....  I simply just walked out.

I quit using advance last year and I use autozone for the daily drivers and oil, filters, paint, etc. For my 5 old cars I use carquest, rock auto, and napa. Rock gets most of the business for the old cars though since I won't use the box stores anymore for old cars, I don't like parts disintegrating and flying off the car and that happened on 2 different cars last year for me that came from advance. I also have a 1980 spirit with the iron duke with manual tranny that needed a clutch master cylinder last year. I replaced it 3 times with advance/autozone parts in 90 days, tried to get oem from jeff at kennedy's and he couldn't help. Finally cross referenced the part number and found exact oem match from a delorean parts dealer in ohio and problem solved. The generic masters they were selling me were chinese crap!!

When I was getting parts for my 70 Javelin project the "rookie" said he wanted a Hudson to do up as a street car! I almost hit the floor and he knew what the car had for a motor too!
I did say some thiing about rice and he said he only drives one to get him around never to put any money into it to "rice it out".

I've never had any reason to try anyone but NAPA. Me and the owner of the local store were good buddies even in high school, 50 years ago.
And he's one of my circle track sponsors.
  I feel for you guys.

X2.

It's been my experience that the name over the door is not that important. If you find a good counter man, stick with him wherever he works.

It is more the people at the counter than the chain itself.
I generally use one of the three Advance autos in town. If you have more than one store in town you will find that they use one location as the "warehouse" for the others. Once I found out which one is the "warehouse" that's were I go! There is also one or two people there that I head the other way when I see them working the counter. I hide in the back until I can get to one of the ones I know is good! or at least not afraid to try and help!
They often let me in the back and go through every radiator hose in the racks till we found one that would go between the 4.0L waterpump and the lower outlet on a 69 Ramblers radiator! It ain't as easy as that sounds! Same with the top, searched till we found the right combo.
I also went back of the counter when looking for an exhaust peice I needed that was not in the books, no joy on that one though. Ended up ordering flanges from Summit and welding up my own.
The Advance auto in town also provided my 69's Fuel sender lock ring and o-ring. NO they did not know they could get it either! I told them to look up an 87-88 Amc Eagle and they did, bought it, direct fit.
That's what sucks, when they can get it or even stock it and don't know it!

As for master cylinders, NEVER give them your core till you KNOW the one you got is right!
Been there done that, what a PIA to get sorted out again!

After the Advance auto debacle, I went directly to Carquest. I ordered yesterday and will be picking up the master cylinder today from them.
