I'm having a problem with Tire clearance on my 65 American wagon I measured the width with the drums on and I came up with 57 and 1/2 in everything I read says that an American rear is about 56 and 1/2 in and Gremlin Spirit Etc 58 and a half I'm somewhere in between those is it something I'm doing wrong

According to Moser, you take measurements with the drums off.

Hornets sometimes used different axle widths than Gremlins, I've got a Model 20 out of a 74 Hornet V8 Sportabout 'thinking' it would be identical width to the OE Gremlin Model 15 axle - turned out to be about 1/2 narrower. A great 'happy accident' on the Gremlin when it came to fit wider wheels and tires, but a surprise none-the-less. |

Take the drums off and remeasure the rear from axle flange to axle flange. You probably do have a V8 American rear. All the V8 Gremmys, Hornets and 68-70 Javs and AMX's used a 58.5 inch rear. I swapped a 69 AMX rear into my 74 Sportabout and then that rear went into my Gremmy. My Gremmy rear then went into my 73 Javvy.

68-69 Javelin and AMX were about 1/2" wider, than the 70 and later Javelin, AMX, Hornet and Gremlin.

I've come to the conclusion that I have an American rear in the car and I don't have enough clearance between the tire sidewall and the upper inner fenderwell. I have 215 X 75 X14 tires mounted on Torque Thrust II rims. The backspace is 3.5 inches (only b/s available for that rim). Thinking my only option is to take the rear out and have it narrowed about 3/4" on each side and see if the stock axles can be shortened and still fit in the carrier.I'm leaving the stock axles to keep from the temptation of taking the car to the track ( had my fill of racing and giving my money to NHRA after 34 years ).

You know i have a 64 wagon...Rear tire will always be a challenge...I`m running a rear from a 68 AMX...i have run 7 inch wide wheels with a 4.5 back space a 26x8 slicks...right know i have 7 inch mag`s 3.5 bs and a 27x7 inch pie crust slick...i trimmed and rolled the wheel well lip....On my 68 i have torque Trust D`s in 15x7 with 235 60 15...they have more bs then the 15x6 and that allows the tire to sit further in the well

Could, just an option, put in a shortened Ford 8.8 or find a Ranger 8.8 that is 56.5" and bolt it up. It's cheaper then shortening a AMC20, can get posi, many gear ratios, disk brakes and a stronger axle if you go the 31 spline, same bolt pattern.
Just an option, but then there is that, it's stronger, go faster issue! Life is tough!

I checked again and I'm going to try a 205 75 15 which is supposed to be almost a half inch narrower. if that doesn't work I can probably use them on my Gremlin and then go to plan b.
