I dont know exactly how old it is the boat is a 72 so u would assume it could be a 72... i could open it up and check....get it to tdc and check...

It's very easy to get #5 & #7 Switched... done it more than once... 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

A lean condition / lack of fuel,  will / can, cause backfire & bucking etc... What Carb ?
But there is a Smokey Yunick saying... "90% of Carburetor problems are Ignition Problems..."
or something like that...  Modern blended fuels cause problems with rubber parts
in Fuel Pumps (diaphragm) Fuel Lines, Carbs (accel pump diaphragm), etc

When pulling plugs, they are black so its rich, so it maybe the timing gears...??

Check to see that all the rocker arms are intact.

? Over tight Valves / Rockers ?...  Wrong / too long Pushrods ?
