What is the difference between a 230 and the 232 I-6?

A 230 is Kaiser six with overhead cam. The 232 is a conventional pushrod six that debuted in 1964. Joe

It depends on which 230 you're asking about.
GM also had a 230 six cylinder from about the mid 60's to late 70's, with a layout not too different from a AMC 232. Then Chrysler made a 230 back in the fifties, but that was a flathead. Since you're asking on this AMC forum I'd assume you're asking about the already mentioned Kaiser 230 OHC six made in the middle 60's, but that was years before AMC took over Kaiser, and Jeeps started being branded as AMC.

Thanks for the replies, Mine is not an overhead cam but I need to wait for warmer weather and less snow so I can inspect and find out what it is. Jack

-Chrysler 230 flathead. -Kaiser Jeep 230 overhead cam. -Chevrolet 230 overhead valve. -Pontiac 230 overhead cam. All different engines. Rambler and AMC never had a 230.

displacement in cubic inches is a common shorthand for various engines, but it's otherwise not meaningful. when i was a kid "327" mean "chevy" and it was almost impossible to get people to believe that AMC made their own "327". it's jiust the size of a hole and a stroke.

If the engine is in a car, we can narrow it down, unless someone dropped in another engine.
