To redo the hoses and wiring on the Jav you have to remove this panel. It took a bit of work to carefully pry it away from from its water proof factory sealer as not to mangle it. Since this probably wont be the last time I need access to it, I don't want glue it back in place. I'm thinking of making my own thin rubber gasket. Any other good ideas?

Plumbers putty. Roll it out into a long string along the inside perimeter of the plate and press it into place. Good seal, easy to remove later.

I made a gasket from 1/8" neoprene foam and used permatex to hold in place on the panel side (close to the original for looks), but the caulk/putty would work as well and be easier/cheaper.

Be careful with the caulks. Some caulks that aren't intended for auto use may stain the paint, aggressive caulks especially. Making a thin rubber gasket sounds like the easiest to deal with multiple installs and removals. No matter what type of caulk you use it will be a mess to get off.

3M Strip Caulk is specifically made for this type of application....problem is is comes in big box, sounds like Freecat1 has some to help!! This is not a liquid or silicone type material....will not stain paint.
