What did '68 Javelins come with? Model 20? Same question for 88 Eagles. You can probably see where I'm going with this, my Eagle has a beefy rear in it (assuming stock but locked) and my Javelin has a crappy one legger. Possible to switch?

Eagle is a 15.
Jav could be a 15 if originally a 6 cylinder car. Eagle is wider and mounts beneath the springs. |

Eagle is definitely a 15 IF stock, and it's never a locking or twin grip differential. All eagles came with open differentials. They are a pretty light unit.
If yours is "locked" then it's broken, or someone has swapped - and I hope they kept same ratio in rear as front or kiss the t-case by-by.
Yeah, like the man said - pads will be different as Eagle differentials are under the springs for added height, Javelin diff mounts OVER the springs to keep the car low.

The diff definitely isn't broken, and it also definitely isn't open. Lockers are pretty common offroading accessories...

There was no SX/4 in 1980, and no sedan. Just the wagon. SX/4 is a 1981, 82 and 83 car only. The TSM states only open diffs (at least my copies)
The locker might be an off-road accessory, but they aren't stock AMC issue, so all I was saying is that it's not a stock AMC differential as it came from the factory. Someone has changed things. And if it's Eagle, it's a 15 and not a 20. Again, if you have one with a 20, it's not an eagle differential. Pmm and I have owned a few Eagles over the years......... multiple SX/4s and wagons for me, not sure for pmm, SX/4s from what I gather. Edited by billd - Sep/23/2011 at 6:39am |

Thanks for the info Billd.. was a longshot anyway, thought I might get lucky and actually find a use for that darn Eagle sitting in my yard (where it's been for a year now).

Had to look at the paperwork from my old SX4 again. Bought in '80 but '81 model year. Definitely no Model 20 in them, but later models actually had the 2 piece axles still AND had D35C cast into the diff housing.
My '81 Wagon is getting an 8.25 from an XJ swapped in (3.08 gears, slightly stronger and CHEAP! $35 from a Jeep guy swapping to better ratio) I found a D44 I have in my collection of parts (from a '66 Travelall 2wd) is the same width, same bolt pattern as XJ but it has 2 piece axles too! |
