An uneven piston surface or being down in the hole in combination with higher compression will increase the probability of pinging. Modern engines have more of a flat top design on the piston for an even burn surface as well as close to zero deck as possible in order to get great quench(squish) which improves fuel mixture distribution. If you can avoid hot spots and the creation of an environment that results in excess carbon build up in lower areas on the piston surface, the fuel will burn more evenly and produce more power without pinging.
But remember, creating more power may result in having to run premium grade gas so if you want to run regular or mid grade just find an eariler set of heads and use the pistons you refrenced earlier. 8.8:1 compression should be pretty easy to feed on mid grade and maybe even be happy with regular grade gas.
