Has anybody ever used a brown paper sack to make a thin gasket ???? I am setting up my oil pump and the "thin" gasket I was supposed to get with my mid-plate kit from Bulltear came with two .010 gaskets and I believe the "thin" ones are on "backorder".  I read on the interweb about using brown wrapping or bag paper and coating it with spray copper gasket sealer, people claim it works good ?

Thanks, Mike

Thin are back in stock. They squish to about .006. Pm me your name and address and I will look your order up on Monday.

Clearly that is the better solution, but to answer your question, before the thin ones were available I did make my own gaskets from thick paper.  I used #2 Permatex "aviation" sealant.  Not sure the next guy that worked on it would appreciate having to clean that stuff off, but I got the pump clearance I wanted and it never leaked.

Thanks for the info, I like the idea of aviation Permatex better, used a lot of that stuff in the boat biz. Do you install the store bought gaskets dry ?  I would think some AV Permatex on them would be a good "insurance".  Anyway, I sent Matt a PM, hopefully he will get me a gasket in a reasonable amount of time but its good to know there are other alternatives.

Never had a problem with the stock gasket,  no sealant needed.  The aviator goop is nasty and hard to scrape off if you ever have to work on it again.

My dad used a lot of craft paper back in the day. I still have the vintage gasket making kit he used.
