With both engines being in stock form, what is the weight difference between a 232 straight 6 and a 304 V8?

550 lbs for a 304 or 290 give or take a row...
I seem to remember the early short deck pre 1970 232 was a skosh under 450.

I am taking a stab from memory and could be wrong. I could be wrong
about the date for the deck height change...

Aluminum heads can bring a 304 down by 70~ lbs if weight
is a problem.

Better to start with a 360 anyhow.

Edit, there is an excellent aluminum head for the AMC L6
from Eddelbrock that should knock off at least 50 lbs and add a few HP.

A local engine builder of stroker 4.6's says the head was good for
an honest 20HP and 20 Torque. He dynos nearly every engine he builds.

I thought the 81and up AMC 6 was around that weight or even a little more. That's with the aluminum intake, fewer counterweights on the crank, smaller headbolts, and a little less excess cast iron around the bottom mains.

I've heard around 520 for the earlier AMC 6s.
560 for the 290.

But of course that's my memory too.

500 or so for the six, 550 or so for the V-8 is about right. The early six is only about 50 pounds shy of the V-8. The 81+ six is a bit lighter, by about 50 pounds, so around 100 pounds under the V-8.

there was only about 70 lbs difference between a 258 and a 304.  50 for a 232 prior to 81. then the 258's lost 50 lbs Approx. so there is only about 20 lb's difference.

Wink 550 - 50 = 500 ... where did the other 100 come from ?

Thanks guys. It is time to V8 my Rambler. I was asking because of possibility of having to change the front springs. If there is only a 50 pound or so difference, I'm not going to worry about it. The 232 is from a '77 Postal Jeep and the 304 is from a '79 AMX, FYI.

That extra 50-100 lbs won't hurt a thing.
It may lower the front slightly, might look better.
Alum intake, and headers would help reduce it even more.
I put a 455 Pontiac where a 232 was in my 70 rebel and it
only dropped about 2 in, looks better than it did, still don't
bottom out.

That's what I was thinking. The car originally came with a 196 but I swapped it out for the 232. The bigger 6 didn't change the height at all. It even sits higher than I like. The 304 should diffinitely make the car look better in the front.

I dropped a 360 in a 79 258 Spirit about 2 months ago . front dropped about 1/2 an inch. We ended up cutting the springs to get it down an extra inch to where he wanted it . It still has lots of ground clearance  .

Aluminum intake and Eddy heads on a 360 and it will be lighter.
I have a 304 iron 2BBL manifold here and it weighs 70 lbs with carb.
Heads and manifold will save 100+ lbs.
