At the age they are, most likely. I have seen some where the top was ground off, a new handmade insert made of nylon or teflon fitted, and the top welded back on. However, I believe it is illegal to weld any steering component. A new one is the best option.

Are our RHD Matador pitmans the same as the LHD ones?
The old Matador went through car club scrutineering and the arm was its only fault. |

I would not expect to see a difference between LHD and RHD pitman arms. They are symmetrical in design.
I suppose a person could check part numbers! Last I knew, but this was 4 or 5 years ago, they were still available new. |

I thought I saw a comprehensive write up that gremx wrote about this a little while ago. I am sure that all the AMI built cars used the heavy duty pitman and idler, that is the stud is a larger diameter. I changed to a variable ratio box so I'm not much help.

I wrote an article on the differences between our pitman arms and the US ones for our club magazine. They are not different as such, just what they used and what we used changed over the years. So what will be in a parts book for say, a 1968 Javelin in the US won't fit a 68 Jav here. It's on this forum somewhere. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll send you the 3 page article.

Sorry for the thread mine, but just noticed and thought this might be of help?
There is a guy in Vic - Mick Robinson - we reconditions balljoints, pitman and idler arms for Dodge Phoenix(es):
http://www.dodgeparts.com.au/?product=dodge-phoenix-idler-arm-1965-to-1971 Those parts are bespoke to RHD cars. Maybe he can easily enough do one for an AMC? |

Good contact to have although the pitman arm should still be fairly readily available new. You may not find the Moog parts listed in Dave's write-up, but there will be interchange parts from other manufacturers. A bit of Googling and eBay is your friend. Don't forget eBay.com rather than .com.au as it will give you more US options then sort by price + shipping, lowest first.
