Not sure how it got that way, but as far as I know, all the parts vendors sell spark plugs that are one sixteenth of an inch too short.

The 'reach' on the plugs is 7/16" when they should be 1/2".

-Next time you have some stock Rambler V8 heads to look at, check it out and see for yourself.

So... Here are some spark plugs that all have 1/2" reach...

...and hey, better yet, we get heat range selection too:

Autolite       4093  hotter
                  4123  medium
                  4092  colder (interchanges with L78YC?)

Champion   L82YC or Power Sport 8814  hotter
L78YC or Power Sport 8883  medium

NGK           BP6HS  hotter
                  BP7HS
                  BP8HS  colder

Copper Head Gaskets for Rambler V8

We can use a 287 head gasket on a bored out 250, and we can use a 327 head gasket on a max bore (approx 3.95") 287, but what about a max bore 327 block which has been bored .050" three times?

Here's pics showing custom made copper head gaskets for XRV8 Gremlin's 4.155" bore 443 CID engine.

Showing also XRV8 Race Parts' new copper head gasket fire ring tool (notice of intellectual property)

The fire ring tool work hardens the otherwise annealed copper which enables a bolt on copper head gasket for a block with no o-rings.

-no more need to spray the head gasket with 'copper coat'

-only needs small beads of silicone around water jacket ports

I gotta say...I truly love your work!
The funny thing is that I was surprised at how healthy it sounded (I know I shouldn't have been).
One question though, What was all that racket that I heard on the inside?
I heard the fuel pump pre start-up, Was that the fuel pump making that noise?
Also, I bet that there are some spray-on acoustic deadeners that you could use to cover the interior with, that don't weigh anything at all.
Anyway, keep up the good work.
Can't wait to see video from the strip.

Hi, thanks for your generally positive comment G-Man.

I did not expect a need to improve audio quality, thinking most people would understand the camera does not have a magnificent microphone.

(edited this part of my reply because I thought it was too cheezy)

No criticism intended whatsoever.
I only mentioned audio deadener because, A: I have driven a car around on the street completely gutted myself. After a short trip (even just to the dragstrip and back) no matter how sweet the motor sounds, it will get on your nerves. B: A spray on sound deadener will make the car appear to be more "finished" to outsiders, especially non-AMC'ers. Even if it had a spackle/fleck finish to it.
The "racket" I was referring to, was a high pitched whine that I was hearing.
I understand audio quality, and thought the motor sounded awesome. I only heard the whine when you had the camera inside of the cabin. That was why I was asking about possibly an excessively loud fuel pump? If it was fuel pump, they have ways of getting them quieter inside with an isolation/bushing kit.
You are definitely doing some awesome work...eventually when I put my '66 Ambo back on the road, I will be looking to you for parts and support.
Let me know what you think brother,

It's really more of an audio quality issue; in reality, the fuel pump is not as loud as it seems on the video.

Again, 'in real life' when you stomp on the gas pedal, you can't hear the fuel pump anymore... just the intake and exhaust sounds.

Thanks again for your comradery G-man.

I wouldn't mind trying to use a 'blinder' on the right side of my helmet -so I can't see the other car in the staging lanes -to increase my concentration to cut a better light.

That is a thirsty sounding Gremlin. No wonder your fuel gauge is almost on empty. Makes me want to paint my car silver Thumbs Up

Note: adding this reply at a much later date with apology to Pit Crew for missing his question.

1) We have a very believable statistical truth saying 'yes, it's ok to mount your 'points ignition coil' in a horizontal position' established by all '56-'67 Rambler V8s coming stock with a horizontally mounted old school conventional oil filled coil.

(tens of thousands of units, all came with horizontal coil, no problems)

The unbelievable statistical truth will attempt to prove otherwise by using fewer examples -typically one or two examples, the person saying 'mine did this or that' ...then the parrots come by and start repeating what so-and-so said ...as if 'the other guy's word' is the infallible truth.

(mainstream news medias consistently use false statistics to sway the minds of under-educated people)

EG: One engine block showed signs of 'core shift' so all the engine blocks are bad. = false statistic.

2) Regarding 'a tiny air bubble' inside the coil.

This is related to the old German proverb "Fear makes the wolf seem bigger'.

Which is related to another saying 'familiarity breeds contempt'. (people tend to exaggerate)

Probably most people, including me, don't like to admit they made a mistake.

However, most of my parts failures are due to installer errors one way or another. (like 'oops, that is a bad/shorted out ballast resistor ...and I fried the coil)

Just make sure you have a measured 9 volts or less at the coil + terminal (with 'points type' ignition)

Wanted to add more explanation about the 'concept' of 9 volts to the coil...

...as I understand it... the reason for 9 volts is:

The ignition system still operates in it's original configuration which is based on electrical math when running a 6 volt electrical system.

...and the instrument cluster gauges too: that's why the instrument clusters use a 'voltage regulator':

Because the gauges were originally designed to work on cars with a 6 volt electrical system.

Why 6 volt? and why 9 volt?

Because of 'system overcharging':

A 6 volt automotive electrical system will actually produce up to 9 volts in order to fully charge the battery.

(same thing is going on with a 12 volt system -where the 12 volt system can make up to 15 volts to fully charge the battery ...so your new battery will read more than 12 volts, fully charged)

So the older 6 volt parts are made to handle 9 volts (like the instrument cluster and the Kettering aka 'Delco points' ignition)

-this is also why my gas gauge reads low: because I followed Internet leadership saying to install a 5 volt transistorized voltage regulator for the temp and fuel gauges...

Update: If you use a 5 volt transistorized voltage regulator to re-power your ancient gauges, they will read low from lack of sufficient voltage. -Should use a 9 volt instead, as I understand it.

This is why we want 9 volts to the coil (it's a vestige of the past because the ignition was designed when they used 6 volt electrical systems) and this is why AMC electrical engineers simply added the resistor wire into the electrical system for the + wire to the coil -the resistor wire is doing the same thing as a ballast resistor on a vintage Mopar -reducing 12 down to 9 so the coil gets it's original design voltage.

Restated for clarification:

-if you run 12 volts to the coil, it will overheat and 'burn up the coil' (coil is made to run with 9)

-same thing with 'ancient' fuel and temp gauges (they were originally made to run with 9 also)

-both were originally designed 'way back when' -when cars came with 6 volt electrical systems

-instead of redesigning the gauges and ignition, they just added lower cost 'voltage regulator devices': the one for the instrument cluster and the resistance wire to the coil instead

...real simple once we know the reason why
