Correct... here is the link to select which from the seal you want. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/american+motors,1979,amx,5.0l+304cid+v8,1002801,engine,crankshaft+seal,5604 I suggest finding other stuff to add, as you may need to make the shipping cost worth while. Sometimes finding a not so discounted item will keep the shipping from being split. May have to juggle which item may save you in shipping cost when added. |

I know you guys mention it should be applied from the inside, this one seems to be applied from the outside as it has an outside lip, is this correct? Edited by rickyboada - Nov/14/2018 at 11:26am |

Unfortunately its not the National 710447 nor the Timken 472341 because those both have an outside diameter of 2.75 while my timing cover has an opening of 2.36
Man this is frustrating lol as you guys can see in the pics, My beautiful engine is ready to go!!! (almost) lol

It is the harmonic balancer that seals to that seal and not the crank snout... Are you checking to the balancer???

Check to make sure your balancer has no wear ring where the seal rides.
If there is a wear ring, you will need the optional sleeve to seal properly. Here is the link. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/american+motors,1979,amx,5.0l+304cid+v8,1002801,engine,harmonic+balancer+repair+sleeve,5408 |

From the pics, I believe I see the rubber lip from the original seal, which is installed from the inside. Push on that lip with a screwdriver, if it flexes, it's your old seal. The paint may be so thick that it's hiding the edges of the original seal. Bob tufcj

Sure looks to me like you are going to have to dis-assemble the front of the engine...
Remove the Timing Chain Cover from the block... And agree, remove the Old Seal from the INSIDE of the Timing Chain Cover that appears from the pictures to still be in there maybe, then install the New Seal from the INSIDE of the Timing Chain Cover, and re-assemble the Timing Chain Cover and the Front of the AMC V-8 Engine... Oh, and as someone else pointed out BE SURE the OIL SLINGER is on the Crank BEFORE putting the Timing Chain Cover back on the block ! And this is wayyyy out of context, may want to do some little Oil Drain Back Mods to the inside of the Timing Chain Cover where it nestles up so close to the front main bearing cap while it is off of the block... ( oh boy, can-o-worms )
