Just to inform anyone who is wondering about switching gas tanks, just tonight I replaced mine and it worked great. Spectra AMC 1 Tank, ST103 Tank Straps, new fuel sending unit from American Parts Depot. Had to grind down the pegs in the ends of both straps to fit into the slots, and couldn't use original J-Bolts since they were not long enough so went to home depot, bought 5/16 12" threaded rod, bent it and put a washer and nut on the end, worked great. Will probably weld the nut on the end to make sure it never slips, but all in all, new 22 gallon tank lookin good. Now I have to go about selling the old tank, and I could give the old straps and bolts with it!

Now let's see if your fuel gauge is accurate. That's the real test.

Which car do you have? A Javelin or ?? Near as I can figure, the tank fits a lot of later built AMC's but doesn't fit Javelins very well unless heavily modified....

I fit it onto a '73 Javelin. I had to modify the straps by grinding the pegs to fit in the slots and I had to make my own J bolts since the originals weren't long enough, and I had to get a 3 foot long vent hose since on the AMC 1 tank it comes out on the other side. It sits a bit lower but still above the differential and with the new wheels and tires and I don't think it will scrape if I go over a bump, but if so hopefully I can fix it with new leaf springs and shocks.

I think moparguy did the amc1 in a 70 or later Javelin. I think the main issue is the filler neck is centered, so a cut out may need to be done to allow it to fit, or a customisation of the tank to allow offsetting the neck placement, with cutting and welding.
Also the strap bolts have been sourced by using common hardware long bolts. There a link on making a set for tank installation. |

Hmm, last night I had no trouble centering mine, once it was in place I lined it up with the filler neck and raised it a bit more, then got the straps and it was fine.

How did you attach the filler neck?

My Filler neck lined up just fine, when I dropped my old tank the filler neck was held in place by the 2 screws in the trunk, and the filler neck Grommet, and when I put the new tank in, I put the filler neck in first and just raised the tank until it was close enough to line up, and once it was lined up with the filler neck I put the strap on and they lined up too. As far as I saw everything about it was centered, the filler neck placement, the hole in the tank for it, and the straps were right in place.

Later Javelin, Hornet, Concord, Eagle (not SX4) tanks are pretty much identical on top. Vent line locations differ. 73/74 Javelin have a push-in filler neck, so easy to fit. Early Javelin filler necks are brazed/soldered, so likely need a later filler neck or braze yours into new tank.
I have used the Spectre AMC1 in a '73 Hornet, '74 Javelin, '78 Concord, '81 Concord. Relocated vent line to suit with later straps and pickup. Late pickup sending unit may not work with early gauge. On the Hornet I swapped in a later gauge. For the Javelin, I swapped the sender resistance strip with the stock one. If replacing the tank and considering an electric fuel pump in the future, good time to modify the tank for an internal pump before filling with gas. Hope this helps,RD. |

I bent up some carriage bolts to replace the tank bolts on my Javelin.
(I've seen threaded rod split when bent)
