It is possible what you have isn't an AMC version of the Carter RBS. Carter (and other makers) made it's various carbs -- YF, YFA, YH, RBS, AS, ... -- as a basic core design but manufactured/adapted for each OEM (AMC, GM, ...) application. Throttle linkage, base pattern, orientation, air cleaner adapters, etc. In the case of 50s, 60s Ramblers, they made RBSs with the now-funny twist rod you have.

The Rambler twist throttle connection on the carb is pretty distinct. It's a bummer you cant post photos. If you're still stuck, send me, via Personal Message (in the white bars, below the bug red-white-blue-black banner) photos of the linkage end of the carb and i'll post here.
