Manual 3sp?

Manual 3sp with overdrive?

Column shift?

They had lots of transmissions in these.

Iron case or aluminum? There should be an identification tag on it probably on the left side.

Fatsco and Northwest transmission will have parts.

It's a Borg-Warner cast iron model M-10.

The Ford-o-matic and Cruise-o-matic are close cousins. Many parts interchange.

It's a 3-speed automatic, and the shift quadrant should have a D1 and D2 position. In D1, it runs through all 3 gears. In D2, it uses only 2nd and 3rd.

You done good, The aluminum version is "ok" but that Cast iron beasty is generally a better trans.

I'd offer up a floor shift valve body, but I'm not sure it would swap in. The 65 Floor shift M 8 has a conventional PRND2L. It still starts out in 2nd unless you floor it or manually select 2nd gear though.

In 66 they went to an aluminum Warner behind the 287, though some may have got a changeover iron trans. Both my brothers Marlin and his Classic parts cars had 66 aluminum trans in them. What possessed AMC to swap the trans for a last year model is beyond me.

It's not a model 10, but an M-8 by the tag (8H). What we call the model 10 uses a throttle valve cable instead of a vacuum modulator. Does yours have a cable from the throttle linkage to the transmission instead of a vacuum line? If so it's the M-10. If no cable then it's the M-8. Only the six cylinder cars got the aluminum transmissions until the later sixties. All V-8s got a cast iron case auto trans. When the 290 was introduced in 1967 it got an aluminum cased trans in 2V form, used the iron case M-11 in 4V form.

See www.nwtparts.com for a rebuild kit. There are some things you can do short of a full rebuild unless you know for sure that's what it needs. If it has sat for a long time it won't hurt to rebuild it. It's one of the easiest auto tranny to build if you're pretty mechanically inclined, but you do need a good manual. The factory AMC service manual (TSM) has all the info you need. I recommend getting one! They can be found on e-bay or through an auto literature dealer.
