7.35 x 14 would not have been a standard size on that car....just a tad large.
You might do well with a 185 x 75 x 14  or 185 x 70 x 14 and they shouldn't cost $475.
74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

Original tire size was 6.45 x 14 for the sedans with 6.95 x 14 as an option. Wagons got the 6.95 X14 standard. Use the tire size chart farna referenced for the conversion. Tires should be available for anywhere from $55 to $100 each (U.S.). Joe

thank you all for your expertise: that is so nice to meet people in the know.
So if the correct tire size was 6.45-14 that would be 185/65-14 and for
6.95-14 it would be either 195/70-R14 or 215/60-R14
I'd like to stay with smaller rather than larger tire since it's not a performance car. So 185 or 195 would do, with a preference for the 185.
I'll go check for 185/60 and 185/65
Thank you all.
cheers
Ivan

Froggy, while reading thru this thread I'd be interested in knowing just which owner's manual AND tech manual do you have that did NOT have the tire size info in it. Never heard of such a thing.

185-65-R14 IMO will look ridiculously small on that car. Would a 195-75R14 or a 205-70R14 fit?

On my Classic I've got whitewall 215-75R15's. $25 each at Walmart because they were in the attic for a long time and they wanted to get rid of them.

I'd stick with a 195 or 205 tire. The 195 will look a bit closer to stock, but the 205 isn't bad. The wider tires are SAFER to drive with. I used stock width bias ply tires on my first Rambler back in 1979 -- never again! On a damp road (after a light rain) I ran up on my turn and did a quick brake and turn at about 30 mph... car slid straight! Ran 205s after that and never had an issue. That was on a 1961 American. The original tires did look awful small in comparison.

I've driven 1964-1969 Rambler Americans for decades, and the radial tire size I've settled on is 185/75/R14.  A wider tire will make the steering heavy at low speeds on a manual steering car.  That said, 195/75/R14 tires will also fit just fine.

the manual I have are the owner's manual and the technical service manual
Since I'm still waiting to get the alternator bracket fabricated, I haven't made a choice yet on the tire size.
I'll be going around and check prices soon Leschwab was way to spendy!
cheers
