Working on an AMC 258 out of a 1986 Jeep CJ7. Currently it's in my Gremlin. Last year before we stored her for the winter (outside, covered) she ran like a sewing machine. Tried to start her up this spring and now she won't idle. We rebuilt the carburetor last year, new plugs, wires, points, distrib cap, new fuel pump as of 10 minutes ago, new vacuum advance. She doesn't have too many ancient parts. I've cleaned the venturi cluster, cleaned a few other ports and connections. Ran Heet and Seafoam through her too. I'm out of ideas.

The carburetor is the Carter BBD.
I can provide all pics and info that you may need.

Does it have power brakes? If so, try plugging the hose going to the brake booster. A stuck open EGR valve also cause this type of problem. Either one of these things will cause a massive vacuum leak which will keep the car from idling. Also, if manually closing the choke plate allows the car to idle, that's another sign that there is a vacuum leak.

Also, you mentioned working on the distributor. Did you re-set the timing once you finished? The timing being off can also keep the engine from idling.

It has drum brakes all around, not sure if those are power or not.

Where would the hose and EGR valve be located? My brother put the engine in for me and I'm still learning all the little parts and stuff. Also thank you for the reply.

If power brakes, there is a cylindrical can between the firewall and the master cylinder. That would be the brake booster.

I would be cleaning the points and checking the dwell. Fresh fuel might help also.

Hi, when you swapped the 86 258 into the 70s Gremlin, did you swap the ENTIRE 86 258, ie with the 86 dist and carb and all emissions sensors, or just the long block, and are using the 70s dist and carb and other accessories? Makes a big difference. You have a points dist, is your BBD 86, or non feedback? check your fuel filter, return at 12 oclock? The BBD was not available factory until 77, what year is your Gremlin? 86 exhaust/intake, or stock 70s Gremlin exhaust/intake? Pictures always help! good luck, gz

I've had similar issues from the new fuels crystallizing over the winter. A crab rebuild in the spring took care of it. I now only run ethanol free gas in my cars, especially before storing for the winter.
