Column shift knob removal, how?

Looking to install a custom shift knob onto my "three on the tree" '69 Rambler. Do I just grab the old one with some vise grips and twist? Are they just pressed on?

Just pressed on.  Grab it with vise-grips and just pull.  It is splined so if you twist it could crack.
