Hello, I'm rebuilding the rear drum brakes on my 1969 Rambler wagon. On the bottom of the shoe there are two holes. One large and one smaller. The spring that holds the bottom of the shoes together and attaches to the adjuster arm, does it attach through the small hole like this:

Or the big hole like this:

The small hole seems to be right, less likely for the spring to pull through and the adjuster seems to work better there. Any clue?? (Sorry for the crooked pictures)

I always use the hole that allows the best movement without rubbing if more than one. Usually it is near the edge most area, which your small hole is. I think the shoe manufacturer uses a right left universal shoe, which may account for two large holes, instead of one. Or universal fit shoe for other styles... Donno, just seems a wee odd.

All of the service manuals have pretty good pictures of the brake assemblies.   I usually have a service manual open somewhere near me when I am doing brakes because I don't do them every day.   Use the book.  Joe

It's the large hole according to the pictures in my 66 American TSM.

Ah, just noticed how compressed that spring is when on the wee hole. That when looked at, is not good, there should be some stretch with the coils not so close when installed. So just a noticable condition when checking your spring installation.

I had been looking at the wee spring behind the one you had questioned about, thinking you zoomed in on the second shot, as the section seemed tight in view.

Good point! I looked it over again and moved it to the larger one. Seems ok, I guess I'll see! Thanks for the help everyone.

Cell phone pictures are priceless. Take pics of this stuff before you take it apart, and when you get ready to put it back together you'll have them to refer to.
