About your comment about not being original color and material... well I figure if your attempting on doing what is proper for installation, then might as well pick what fits for the car.
I like the early version better... but that is just me. |

I could be wrong, but I don't think AMC started the tan vinyl tops until '73. I just don't care for either black or white against my turd brown paint, so I'm taking a liberty there. The grain is also different, but so close that I doubt anyone but me would notice. In any case, this car is meant to be a nice, original looking driver, and i don't think the color change will detract too much from that.
Yes, it seems the normal method is to glue the "A" pillar seams. There's some good info about this process on some of the classic Chevy forums, and it appears AMC pretty much did it the same way. EDIT: 1972 AMC brochure shows vinyl roof being available in black, white, blue, green and brown. Tan isn't one of them, but that's sorta brown. Edited by CamJam - Sep/20/2017 at 4:27pm |

I don't believe that seem on the bright yellow car is correct. It is down far too low. Mine certainly isn't that way nor have I seen another like it.

I thought that with camjam's link in his reply to me. Then I searched and found a number of variances. Though I knew his was an early 72 so I searched for unrestored early and late 71 Javelins. By chance Eddie Stakes had some cars to verify what I and Camjam were seeing. For some reason AMC sometime after January made a change, or the supplier of the vinyl kits. It effected late and early 72 Javelin bodies. So what is the build month and year of your car? |

Here is a picture of my 1971 javelin. There is no factory seam. They used a whole piece of vinyl. It's an early build Javelin, so maybe it was changed as the year progressed.

Hey there Cam, My 72 Javelin AMX has the vinyl seam close to the top of the A - Pillar. Looks to be the original with seam going slightly angled. Also happens to be what I am trying to restore a bit. Hopefully I can flatten the edges along the door without ripping or cracking.
