Some solvent like varsol and a soft brush would probably help in getting rid of the oily stuff. Soap and hot water afterwards might do a good job of freeing up any particles. A garden hose could also work. I don't know what the engine shops do, maybe soak it in a tank?

Google "AMC V8 dipstick tube tool."
Buzzman72...void where prohibited, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

Did your pickup tube have a plastic spacer button on it still? That is critical.

The can get brittle and fall off. New ones are available though.
