Engine swap is pretty simple, just use the flex plate for which ever trans you are going to use....you will find one major difference in mounting the accessories. The heads have a 3/8" NC thread where the top of the alternator mounts when they changed from Motorcraft (1978) to Delco Alternator (1979 Up). The 1978 engine has a 7/16-14 NC thread .......so you need to do some minor work to remedy. I swapped a 75 401 in my 79 Grand Wagoneer.....I just drilled the Delco upper hole to accept the 7/16" bolt and used the bolt from the 75 engine......problem solved. Just FYI the late head also has 5/16-18 NC in the very front and back corner where the older engines have 3/8-16 NC in all 6 positions on each side to attach the exhaust manifolds to the heads.

The nose of the crankshaft isn't different for the TH400 verses the TF727, is it? I seem to recall that it might.

There is a shim in the crankshaft hole where the TH 400 converter hub goes. Im not sure if you can get a new one. Id find a way to remove it from the 78. Then put it in the 83 engine. (It looks like a bushing, and it is a bushing I basically)

AMC Jeep Part Number 535 2374 may be the Crankshaft Pilot Sleeve "Bushing Ring" for the slightly smaller OD TH 400 Trans Converter Pilot which gets removed if/when a TF 727 Trans is used.
Here is the NOVAK web page about them: |

Sorry, forgot about the bushing, it is very thin walled and looks like a cam bearing. The bushing only needs to be used with the TH400, or removed from the crank of engine previously connected to a TH400......you need no bushing for any engine with TF hooked to it.

So it sounds like op will be installing the '78 360 in his J10 and reusing the existing '83 TF 727.
IF this is correct, the Crankshaft Pilot Ring will need to be removed from the butt end of the crank and the Flexplates will have to be swapped... And I am unaware of when the Mitsu Starter phased in... The TF Kickdown Linkage will need fitted to the '78 360... Hopefully more knowledgeable Jeep folks will chime in with more 1st hand details
