Hello. I am considering a road trip to pick up a used 3 speed. It is coming out of the same year vehicle, different model...different engine blocks. Both 196 ...one cast/ one aluminium...gonna work or not?(fitment that is)
In the game of assumptions....clutch/flywheel should also work...yes/no/maybe so... Thanks for taking the time to help and save me a lot of time

you dont say what kind of car or which transmission.

but its probably the T96, the little partial-synchronized 3-speed. some have ODs attached. there are however some fdiffrernces to watch out for.

the input shaft lengths *should* all be the same, but there are known discrepencies or ambiguities in something related, bellhousing depths, or something. just measure from trans case flat to tip and make sure it's the same. 7" or 7.25" or something.

a definitely known difference between some is the bolt pattern (trans to bell). the top two bolts are all the same. but there is a big pattern, and a small pattern. "big" has the four bolts more square (not exactly square) and "small" has the two lower bolts closer to the two top ones (small rectangular pattern).

OD vs non-OD different drive shaft lengths.

if you were in LA you could drive to my house and pick up some of T96 stuff for free. it's gonna get scrapped soon if no one takes it.

They should interchange. 63+ will for sure. 62 and earlier most likely, but there may be a difference in the crank end. 63+ are all flat, 62- an extended pilot was used on auto trannys. If the crank is flat there is an adapter that pops in to use the extended model trans. Sounds like you're going from an American to a Classic, or vice versa.

Farna, thanks for the info! 64 Classic to 64 classic. 770 (XC) to 550. Tom, I hope you are able to find a home for those parts. A 400 mile ride seems almost too much effort. I have yet to break open the trans. It is very much stuck in 1st gear. USPS Priority flat rate boxes are good for 70 pounds...

If they are both the same engine (six or V-8) they will interchange. The six trans won't work behind the V-8, and V-8 won't work behind the six. Doesn't matter if the V-8 is 287 or 327. Only one six...the 195.6 OHV.  If you have a six the synchros pop out if driven hard and will jam the trans in gear.

Frank thanks. It was to be a 6 to 6.
I was unable to take the ride for the parts.
