Working on installing new two piece strut rod bushings on a 70 Javelin. Looking at pics in both the parts book and the TSM, it appears that with the one piece bushings the concave (dish) of the washers faces away from the bushing and with the two piece bushings the concave of the washer faces the bushing. Can anybody verify this? Also, it appears that the 70 and up uses a jam nut as well, assuming to keep the standard nut from loosening? |

Ha! Yep there are various washer fitments. Can be confusing. Did your kit come with instructions? Usually they do, and I recommend going with the kits instruction.
There was two types of two piece replacement kits from AMC, that were available. One being HD, which has a change up on installation. Billd posted the installation sheet at one time. So with all the different styles available, keeping one set of instruction as the definite standard can't work for all. |

Thanks for posting those. Just what I needed to know. Must have been an updated change as the TSM doesn't show it that way. Thanks again.

As one can see there are 3 variations, let alone there are some kits that have seats that fit between bracket and rubber bushing. Which makes 4 different types. Thus my reasoning to use what is in the instructions for each type of kit. The concaved washers are set by rubber firmness of bushing when assembled, and how It conforms to pressure as it is deflected.
You can probably assume most oe kits that may be missing instruction to be able to use moog instructions, as long as the shape of the bushing cone is formed like pictured by the moog instruction. PS, of the 3 sets I purchased through the years... none had large and small washers. All had large washers. Some had stamped markings to tell you where they face. MOOG, TRW, and Prothane. What I posted are genuine AMC Technical Service Bulletins................. straight from my collection of TSBs
Now those are the original types - the third one shown is not AMC but is a third-party option. So if the car does NOT have stock type AMC bushings, all bets are off. If they are the AMC part, they will match the TSBs posted. Then of course there's the LATER cars such as my Eagle that did have original bushings, but was different - so maybe I need to look back at my LATER service bulletins to see if AMC addressed it again later. |
