Something weird happened today, I replaced the sediment bowl filter on the fuel pump on my American, and as soon as I started the engine it started leaking gas. It never did with the old filter, which I tried putting back on. I'm guessing the diaphragm decided to give out right then and it needs a rebuild.

Which part number fuel pump would this car have used? It's a 1963 Rambler American 440H, 196 OHV with vacuum wipers. I've heard there were multiple types, one for the L Head, and versions for with and without vacuum wipers.

Thanks!

You might check the rubber gasket that goes around the sediment filter cover,  it'll leak if not perfectly placed.

It seems like it would be that since it only started when I replaced the filter but the gas looks like it's coming from under the area where the gasket is.

I've determined that the gas isn't leaking from the filter, it's coming from below from what looks like a small hole. From reading this sounds like a weep hole and if it's leaking this much something is definitely wrong. I've found a pump for a lower price than a rebuild that should work in this engine, but I wanted to confirm. The pump in the car is a Carter 3531S.

So...will a Carter 3025S Pump work in this engine? That's the one I found for sale.

Thanks!
