When I bought my car I didn't know about re-torquing and got at least 45k miles on it before the head had to come off for a valve and ring job. And who knows how long before I bought it that it was last done?
I was surprised though that after torquing a new head gasket it was pretty well loose after the first week of driving and had to be done again. Probably the bolts got another half turn on them the next time around.

only a subset of 195.6 OHV's *need* to be retorqued. not all of them. i'm convinced (from tests and experiments) that if your thermostat either has a bleed hole in it (many do) that pretty much eliminates the thermal cycling that i measured. but an annual/biannual torque-check costs nothing, 20 minutes every year or two... it's common for headgaskets to need retorquing, especially the old sandwich type. i did two additional re-torques after install; if i recall, one the same day after i broke it in initially (i let it cool down, i don't do that TSM hot-torque nonsense, that's nuts, my one strong disagreement with an AMC requirement). then another later in the week? it's written down somewhere if you care (probably not). |
