As I mentioned in another post, I mocked up my cam today to check oil hole alignment. I noticed when I put the cam in, the front of the cam didn't come up flush with the block; you could still push it in about 1/2" or so. I then looked at the back of an Edelbrock cam I have and it has a rectangular block at the end of the cam where it meets the back of the block. I checked out the new cam (the small Summit K8600 cam) and there's no rectangular block. The back of the cam is flat. Do I need to do anything about this or will the timing chain and gear hold it in place? I thinking there's going to be some cam walk. Anyone have any thoughts?

1st, in the Rear Most Journal on the Cam, is there a through hole or 2 longways front to back?
Those relieve oil from the cavity behind the back of the cam and the rear freeze plug. No, the "lug" is not required, Yes, the Cam Sprocket will axially position the cam in the block. Slightly sloped cam lobes and the load of flat tappet lifters "pull" the cam back into the block.

Are you sure the cam is hitting the plug? Take a measuring tape and insert and measure the distance and compare to the cam. I have had problems with the rear cam bearing being tight and have had to ream the bearing to gain enough clearance to push it all the way in

Phat- I'll check it out.
wheelz- The cam goes in fine all the way, but actually it goes in a little too far. It's not sticking out the front, it goes too deep (that's what she said! :D ).

Ok. I looked in the hole and see a small circle about 1/2" size and a rub-mark circle which I assume is where the old cam rectangular block rubbed. This all appears to be on rear cam freeze plug.

On the Camshaft itself, not the block, but on the Camshaft, on the rear most bearing journal,
is there 1 or 2 holes drilled through front to back? These prevent Oil under pressure from building up in the cavity behind the cam and in front of the rear freeze plug and pushing it forward ( cam walk ).

While you at it, do have calipers to measure the axial width of the cam lobes on both cams?
Where that subject recently came up on the forum so that info can be added to that other thread.

The cam will float beyond flush of the front of the block....good idea to check the drain back holes to ensure they are not covered...but if the oil pressure hole is aligned, the drain backs should be fine. 100+ AMC engines behind me, I have used every brand of Cam Bearing and never seen one off....but never say never, it is a good confidence check.
