I need some help identifying the gears and type of differential in this model 20 rear end. Supposedly came out of a 71 V8 Gremlin. Measures 58 1/2" wms to wms.

Thanks!

The numbers shown are not part numbers that line up to the TSM I have so they may be aftermarket. Drain the oil and count the teeth. By the picture I'm guessing 39 on the ring so AM20 had pinions 10 and 11 for this with resulting 3.91:1  and 3.54:1 in 1971.

If there is a fill plug on the rear cover it's an AMC 15. If the fill plug is in the casting in front, next to where the pinion shaft comes out, it's an AMC 20. Standard diff, not limited slip (posi). As styated -- count the teeth on the pinion gear and the ring gear. Divide pinion into ring to get the number, round to two decimal places (39/10 = 3.90).

frana is absolutely correct on the math and I don't understand it either but AMC lists there 39/10 as a 3.91:1. Go figure, maybe they rounded 0 up or just a typo in everything.

41/10 so 4.10 gears. It is a model 20. Diff appears open but both drums turn the same direction.

Definitely an open diff. With no load they will both spin. Hold one axle and the other will still spin with little effort.

AMC didnt make a V8 Gremlin until 1972.   possibly this came out of a V8 hornet...if it is a 1971.

This was a 1971 Gremlin that was a dealer sponsored drag car back in the late 70's. It sat by a barn for a long time till a friend of mine purchased it and restored it. We traded rear ends as he wanted a higher geared and non posi rear axle for a street car.
