After a 2 page thread on this before , I found an intake leak and all was in vain . intake seal now good so back to the carb , its a 4150 aed 750 about 20 years old.I bought it new. Problem was a rich surging @ 2500rpm and below when trying to cruise . after messing with jets and pv to no improvement I robbed an 800 do off my 455 pontiac and bolted it down, wow what an improvement, in idle and surgeing , I did nothing but idle and fuel screw adjustment.
I believe I have a bad metering block, can't c anything but fuel is getting by it somehow . the 800 is almost perfect in the problem area.
A dirt track engine tunner friend said he has seen this a couple times before, changed the block after repeted jet and pv changes, to finally fix the problem.
I ordered a set of qft billett metering blocks with. Adj ifrs and pvcrs.
I've built over 100 holley and never seen anything like this before.
What in the world can happen to a block to cause this?
I'm tearing the old block apart if the new ones fix the carb.
Any comments?
Any suggestions?
Any one seen bad met block before?
I've wasted so much time trying to dial this carb in!
It wasn't this way before I parked in basement 2-4 years!
Ps I have torn carb completely down and sonic cleaned it, no visible problems!
Blocks due in Thursday, report back after install.
Pss the 800 doesn't run any better in mid or top than the 750 did!
750 might actually be better on mid and top.
Thanks

I had on once that constantly dripped fuel. Changed the block and everything was fine then.

It started just after time trials. My wife ran home and grabbed a spare carb for me and I runnered up in the street class still. It was a Mopar meet and the final 8 in the bracket had 3 of our AMCs.

Take a straight edge and make sure the metering block surface on the main body is flat. Also make sure the vacuum port is not blocked in any way that supplies the power valve.

Before I get started, anyone seen the new muscle car review? Its full of AMCs .
Now back to my carb , qft met blocks came in ,they look real nice, put my mains and pv in and mocked up , they are a little thicker than the stock ones, had to bend both pump arms a smidgen . rear bowl now hitting the pcv
Casting around the nipple , had to file it down a bit . front bowl went on fine . I'm bolting it on now , cross ur fingers hope to start it up after while .
Blocks came with a few extra jets , 1 set to richen the ifrs, and a set to
Lean the pvcrs .
Reviews iv read on other forums say they run good out of the box, hope so!
Might have to put a wide band on my wish list next.

Starts and runs great, 4 corner idle now really sensitive, 1/4 turn at a time to get high idle, about 1 turn out. Before almost all way in to kill engine and up to 2 full turns out made little difference. Revs good starts up without touching gas after warm . hope to drive it tomorrow. Had a couple beers tonight . no leaks .
If all is well I'm tearing into the old block this Friday and c if I can c anything out of place !

I have my Muscle Car Review, very happy to see at least two full articles on AMC's. Less than happy to see its the "Von Piranha" on the cover though.

So a emulsion tube cloged would cause a rich off idle condition?
And I can remove the brass plugs, clean everything up and put it back into service?
Thanks

If it just has brass plugs then yes just remove them, and clean it and reinstall new ones as there are no tubes in the wells. If it has emulsion tubes then it will have a machined flat brass looking plug(its the tube) that you will have to figure out how to  remove and clean without destroying it.
