Recently picked up a clean 74 Matador Coupe w/ 360. What is the widest rim and tire combo and wheel back spacing someone has used without modifying the wheel wells for clearance.

Thanks
Paul D.

While I can not tell you the maximum size that you can fit back there, I can tell you that on my '74 which was dropped 3inches, I had 275/60-15s on the 15x7 rallye wheels...and there was gobs of clearance.
Could have gone much bigger.
Remember that this car was 3inches lower than stock height. (For turning left and right...NOT a low rider Thank You very much!!

I now have 295/50/15 BFG's on 8" wide wheels under my 74 coupe with plenty of clearance. 4 1/2" backspacing

I also had 325/50/15 BFG Drag Radials under it on 8" wide wheels with 3.75" backspacing about 10 years ago. They rubbed a little over bumps etc. but with the right wheel they would've easily cleared

I ran 275/60/15's before the drag radials on the same wheels with no issues...

Sorry for digging up the older post. Just thought I would share my experiences.

I went with Mickey drag radials 295/55/16 out back looks good fills the wheel well nice with just enough clearance.

Went with American Racing salt flat wheels. Going to paint the Matador a matt finish gunmetal gray.

It had 295 50's on it when i got it. To me there was still to much space between tire n wheel well so i went with a little taller series tire.
