The change from the metallic EN-66 to the nonmetallic AMC blue happened part way through the 1973 model year, so early 1973 model year cars were still EN-66. My 1973 Ambassador's 360 was built on August 20, 1972 and was originally painted EN-66.

Pontiac blue looks really close to AMC Blue until it fades lighter and greenish. GM Corporate Blue is closer.

Here's the other thing to realize: AMC blue was used 1973-1980, meaning the unpopular years....especially unpopular for stock engine restoration. There are very few people out there who will notice or even care that your engine of those years is not painted exactly stock color. They'll likely be too busy giving you advice you didn't ask for about how you should modify your smog engine for higher performance to care what color you painted it unless it's Chevrolet Orange.

My 1977 232 is painted Pontiac Blue. Nobody has ever called me out on it because it's a smog era six cylinder, meaning nobody gives a flying dog dung about it. I could throw it off a cliff and people would say "good riddance, time for a V8".

Or leave your hood down. Then nobody knows what color your engine is, which means nobody can bust your balls about it. Easy solution.

I just bought a case, 6 cans, of Seymore SN-66. The best deal i could find was at Zoro.com. Total price including shipping was $58.10. You must order a case and it is dropped shipped from the mfg.

Heres the trick........sign up as a Zoro member at there web site. Place your order, do everything BUT don't hit the buy now button. In two days you will receive a Email stating you still have items in your shopping cart and here is a 10% off code.

I was going to reply to FSJunkie,  but you came up with facts to match what I remember about my 73-1/2 Javelin with a 304. It had EN-66 Metallic as well. So maybe at the very end of the 73 run the engines were done AMC blue.

I always thought that EN-66 ran through the end of model year 1973, which would have likely been July 1973 for actual build date. That would make model year 1974 (build dates starting around August 1973) the first cars for AMC Blue.

However I have heard enough people say that 1973 model year cars use AMC Blue that I've started to believe it. All I can say for sure is that it was still EN-66 as of August 1972 production for the 1973 model year.

I have no pics that actually show it and too long ago to remember for sure
and it was long before the internet but my '69 AMX was a mid-November '68 Build
and it was my opinion the engine was Caravelle Blue, car had 93,540 miles
and was pretty much all stock 343 4V Auto Go-Pack, Leather, A/C, Tilt, etc.
Original Engine Tag, but by no means "firm", but THINK it was Caravelle Blue...
No intention to muddy the water with opinion, just sharing fond memories...
Very few 1985-6 pictures, no digital camera, only film prints, have scanned a few,
including this underhood one probably only a couple few months after July 1985 purchase
but sadly shows basically nothing of the color on the engine...
