I picked up a 390 short block this week, and the original oil pan is in decent shape. Someone added a very small drain, or port to the upper pan area as you can see in the pics. Its too small to actually drain any oil, and is in the wrong place anyway. Anybody know what the thinking for this was?

Yes, must be an oil return from something. Didn't even cross my mind.

Like scott said it could be an oil return from a turbocharger or maybe an oil accumulator.

I had a fitting somewhat like that but a smidge larger when I had a turbo on a small block Chevy in my 68 Firebird. It was an oil return from the turbo.

Could be for a low oil warning indicator.
