1973 401 TorqueFlite 727 - 1972 part #321 4090 (by phat69amx)
The (4) non-stock larger converter mounting holes inboard of the smaller stock holes

were added for mounting an aftermarket B&M #60425 10" SuperHoleShot converter.

Picture is of the Transmission side so the balance weight is visible.

Above Borg-Warner Flexplate pictures appear to be of the Engine Side

with the balance weights visible, so it appears balance weights

were located on different sides of the flexplate between BW and TF ?

Should there be a "standard positioning" for taking the pictures ?
Like in the first picture of the '70 390 BW it has a converter hole labeled "12 o'clock" and
located at the top of the picture and the offset crank flange hole labeled and at the bottom.

I like that idea............. if nothing else, rotate the image using your favorite image editor.

There's always an indexing hole (two closer) so if those were always at the same clock position......

Sure it will fit. It will fit all the V-8's.
But if they didn't use it from the factory there isn't a plate for a 360/M-12.

Good info.  Allowed me to ID my flexplates - 71 401 BW and 73 727 401.  I didn't see the part numbers anywhere on the flexplates - are they stamped somewhere?

If anyone is looking for either of these flexplates, please PM me.  I swapped to a 4 sp.

Thanks,

Scott

Just to clear that up, the holes are there, but not as big around, he drilled them out to the Hemi Dia bolt size. the one you have has 2 large holes opposite the weight spot as well, since it is a six car. SH

If the 304/360  flexplates at Napa, autozone.....ect  all have the same part number and weights, which engine is it more closely balanced for? Or are they the same?  If it would cause a vibration issue, how bad would it be?
(For stock 72' 360)
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with them.

By the looks of the one's I've seen, it's the 304 plate.
Not sure offhand on the weight difference. If you have your old weight, then just transfer it over.

any one have a pic of a '69 390 Flexplate ?, or is it the same as a '70?, or is it same as 343 with the weight welded on to it, if so can anyone give me the weight's weight and position ,I am taking out my 390 soon to fix the vibration which I'm sure is due to a 343 flexplate fitted, cheers

amxstv - with (6) converter mtg holes, would guess it's a BW 290 Flexplate ?

pmm - mrblatzman's, from weight size, looks like a BW 401 Flexplate in your 1st post ?

Bought the Autozone flex plate. Did'nt realize until now the 304/360 listed the same part number. Anyway , had my flywheel matched to it by a speed shop. Still has a vibration on take off. Smooths out after that. Still this is not good on the engine. I have it on a 72 360. I am guessing it may or may not be correct for the 304 either. Have searched for 321 2653 for years with no luck. AMC parts book says 73/74 360. Have one more flywheel that a lot of AMC'ERS say is correct for a 360. Will try again. If this does'nt work will decide on either buying a car with a 360 automatic and have that flywheel checked for the counter weight, or remove crank and one piston and rod and having it all balanced. I really would like to keep it a 4 speed. If you can get a known 360 flexplate a speed shop can match the balance.

Will it vibrate in neutral?
If not, maybe it[s a driveshaft angle or tail bushing in the trans.

yep it vibrates in neutral, car was originally a 343 but a 390 has been swapped before I bought it, just need to know if the 69 390 plate is the same as a '70 on the pic in page one of this thread or if not what size weight and placement on the 343 flexplate??

pulled the 390 and found it had the correct flexplate , though full of cracks!, it has the wrong balabcer, a  343 one instead of a 390, probably where the vibration is coming from, never mind  Ive got a good 343 to go in the car for now , the 390 has other issues so it's new owner is going rebuild it

On the left is a flex plate for a 360 with the TH400.  On the right is a flex plate for a 401 with the TH400.  No weight on the 360 (except for the little round riveted tubes) and a 1' x 2 1/4" weight on the 401flex plate.

just wondering if you guys can help out before I go to far with this, pulled out my 343 last night, I'm putting in a recond 4v 290, the flexplate I have with the 290 has 6 holes  and is smaller than the old 343 one which has 4 holes ,luckily I got the convertor with the 290 and it seems to go into the 343 trans ok ,looks like both transmissions I have are M11's, question, are the 290 converters supposed to be smaller by a few centimetres  in diameter?if all seems right I'll keep on moving with the transplant, cheers

Just to go a little further with this. These plates are for '74 to '79 TH400. (the earlier one used with a nailhead trans and adapter ring is different) The "mustache" cut out of the plates IS the balance weight! On the 6 cyl it's cut out all the way. The 401 plate was rebalanced from a 360 plate. The actual factory 401 plate has a very skinny mustache without the "undernose" divot. 304 flexplate has a bigger mustache (smaller weight offset)

304 flexplate to TH400 (almost brand new)

Here's the TH400 to 327 flexplate on the motor

and the adapter ring

How do I figure out which hole is the offset hole on the crankshaft? Does the ring/washer go between the flywheel and crank or flywheel and trans

Posted By: SC397
Date Posted: Dec/23/2011 at 12:22pm
The flex plate will only line up one way with the holes in the end of the crank.  You have to put it on the crank and keep spinning it around until all the bolt holes line up.  The flex plate goes on the crank shaft first, ring/washer goes on the flex plate, the bolts go through the ring/washer then through the flex plate.

Ok I have two more questions... Will the flywheel bolt on backwards, or is there only one way for it to bolt up? I was half awake when I asked the direction and turned my brain around, Does the counterweight go inside or outside? That is what I should have asked in the first place. I'm asking because I can bolt it straight up with no issues with the counterweight facing out.

Posted By: SC397
Date Posted: Dec/24/2011 at 11:05am
You are in luck, it is hellbilly proof!  No, you can not bolt the flex plate on backwards.  (I just tried it)  There is no position where all of the holes will line up when it is flipped the wrong way.
The counter weights on the 904 & 727 are on the side that faces the transmission.
The counter weights on the TH400 and Borg Warners face the engine side.

The TH400 has 3 converter bolts and the 727/9XX have 4

Here is a 343 flex plate along side a 1970 390 flex plate for the M11/M12 Borg Warner Automatics.  The weight on the 390 flex plate is .213" thick x 3.75" long x 1.375" tall.  With the exception of the one torque converter mounting hole, the series of holes were put in there from the factory to balance it to the crank.  All AMC engines were individually balanced.  If you are swapping flex plates, flywheels or, vibration damper, (even on the same displacement engine) the assembly should be re-balanced.

I noticed some of the pictures (including mine) disappeared from this thread.

I have a 290 flexplate from a '69 but what is the (30) quotation below about?

http://s6.photobucket.com/user/carnuck/media/for%20sale%20stuff/photo-22.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

NOTE:
Is the early 6 cyl the same bolt pattern as later ones? I need to balance the nailhead TH400 flexplate for my 290 from the flexplate above and need something zero balanced to do it (early crank would work) Otherwise I will have to drill the center hole out and ruin a perfectly good 290 plate.

Here is the V8 904/727 flex plates all lined up.  Note that in a earlier post there is a second version of the 304 flex plate with a curved weight.
The dimensions of the rectangular weight version for the 304 is 1"x 2 3/4"  the 360 weight is 1"x 3 1/8" and the 401 weight is  larger curved one.
The 6 cyl flex plate not pictured has no weight at all.

carnuck,

The (30) notation indicates which "Series" the part and part number applies to or not.  "Series" being "Model" in AMC speak I reckon.  Series "30" was the AMX.  The 1st digit of the "Series" number is reflected in the 4th digit of the VIN and also shows up as the 2nd two digits in the "Model" Number stamped on the door tag, preceded by the 1st two being the model year.  They go over it in the '69 TSM in Section 16 on page 16-4.

Unaware why the 290 in the AMX would have a different Flexplate than the one used with the 290 in other models.

The 290 in the AMXs was the ONLY 290 that was bolted to a cast iron BW M11. That flex plate is nearly impossible to find as there were only about 300 290/auto AMXs built.

raysinvegas is right about the fact that the only 290 bolted up to the BW M11 was in the AMX's.  According to the Scott Campbell book there were 484 '68 AMX's and 299 '69 AMX's with the 290 and M11.

The 1969 TSM says that 290 with 4V carburetor uses the M11 transmission.

The parts catalog shows the 290 4V convertor drive plate as AMX only.

Does it follow that the 290 4V is only used in the AMX?

Not sure about 4 Speed cars, but all of the 290 4V/M11 were 2 seaters.

I used the M47 flexplate that was balanced for the 290 and had the offset weight positionmatched on another flexplate for the other trans. (in my case, it was a nailhead TH400 to the 290 using the factory crank adapter for the trans off my 304)

1970/71 360 and 390 flex plates.   Notice that we had to weld a little extra weight (red) to the 360 flex plate to match up to the 390. I don't have a 71 401 flex plate to compair to the 390.

The 290 flexplate I have has no extra weight. Just the offset of the holes in the plate.

Yes, but I really don't want to dismantle a freshly rebuilt engine to do so.

If you have a different flywheel (or flexplate) with the correct balance, it can be matched on the new flywheel without taking the motor apart.

I was sick of breaking the mustache TH400 flexplates on my 360 and couldn't find anything aftermarket for a good price handy. I have a manual valve body TH400 and 42" tires and the stocker just wasn't up for the task.

I used a Pioneer FRA-118 which is a 727 flexplate and I redrilled it for a TH400 converter. I had to use .125 spacers to space out the pads. Stock starter works without issue.

Good solution for those looking for an upgraded TH400 plate on the cheap!

Guys, what is this plate? I just pulled it off my 1970 304 and gave it a good buzz with the air grinder. Isn't the 304 externally balanced, as in the flywheel/flexplate needs some sort of counterweight? This is the one thing sitting between my giganto converter and FMX. It has a code on the engine side: 8673(S). It's another 164-tooth plate and when I punch that number into Google it brings me to this thread but I don't see it listed.

No weight tells me maybe a 290 flexplate.  Id like to see how you are going to make an FMX work on a 70 304.

I really have no idea how it works either. Factory ALCOA 3180008 bell + a tall eared and double drilled Cruiseomatic/Flightomatic/Fordomatic/Mercomatic/Mile-o-matic case crammed with a mix of Cruiseo/FMX parts makes for interesting sport.

You just know somebody got me good. Is it likely to have a 290 flexplate behind a 304? Do I really have a 290? That would explain the super revvy fun behavior of this engine! Shocked Doesn't explain the massive POWER though. Something else is off.

Fairly old post, but I'd like to point out that the big holes on one side equal the equivalent amount of weight on the opposite side. Looks like the BW35 plate that was on the 290 of the Rebel 4 dr that was parted long ago.

I had an AW4 flexplate rebalanced for my 304 before I was poisoned by thieves. The early 304 (pre 72) as well as 360 and 401 had flat faced crankshafts for the BW automatics. '72+ had the raised center ring to align the flexplates on.

Have a question that may or not be applicable to this thread. Everything in this thread is about the flex plates for the various automatic transmissions. Is there as much variability in the flywheels for the manual cars. Say for example, are all of the T10 flywheels the same or do they differ by year / engine??

Since all AMC V-8s are externally balanced, all flywheels are unique to displacement.  A 304 is different from a 360 which is different from a 401.  The crankshaft also changed in 1972, so a pre-72 flywheel is different from a 72-up.

Great info on the link showing the various flywheels. I need to make sure I get the date code for my block so I know which to get  (if needed). Assuming the crank is the same year? Thanks guys!

I've got one here that I figure is a 258/242 flexplate, but it's different from my others in that it has two groups of smaller, oblong holes (4 and 2 in each respective group). It matches up in every other respect, so I'm curious as to whether anyone may know what configuration used this.

Here it is stacked on top of my Gremlin's old flexplate that was cracked to heck.

Any ideas? Ideally, I'd like to be able to use it as a backup for my Eagle with an A998, but just knowing what it went to would be cool.

I had one like that.  I believe that it is for the 258.

I bought a parts interchange book on Ebay , if you have a part # this book will tell you what it's for and the years it will work on. My flywheel ended up being for one year and one motor and transmission. So yeah it's very important to be sure you have the right one. Hope this helps a little

I have several flexplates for a 360 TF. They have a 1"X3" weight on them. I have another one that is identical except the weight is 1"X2.5". What is this one for? According to this thread the 304's have a narrow weight.

They are all listed here:
http://rebsamcandjeep.proboards.com/thread/585/amc-290-401-flywheels-flexplates
The 304 -727/904 Flex Plates had 2 different types of weights, a curved one and one with a 1"x 2 3/4" rectangular pad welded on.
The 360-727 had a 1"x 3 1/8" pad welded on it.

I have 1970 AMX with a 360 and the M-B11 trans. Some how 1 of the 3 bolts for the torque converter to bolt to the flexplate broke, leaving some of the bolt in the torque converter. I found this chasing a vibration. I am going to pull apart and try to remove the busted bolt from the tc. Problem is the bolt hole in the flexplate has been elongated and I wouldn't want to trust just replacing the bolt. Am I understanding what I have read here that even if I only replace the flexplate and reuse the tc, I have to have the new flexplate and crank rebalanced as an assembly? Please tell me I am wrong and can just replace the fp. I will be replacing all 3 bolts and spacers to the torqconverter.

I would weld the half a hole shut and make it round again with a die grinder.

I see that most of the info here pertains to late 60’s forward. I was hoping to get info, recommendations on finding a flexplate for an early 60’s 327. Will be bolted up to a stock 59 trans with torque tube.
Thanks for the help.

I added a picture of the TH400 crank bushing to this post with some info.  It is a Jeep thing but if you are transplanting a AMCJeep engine which was mated to a TH400 in to a car with a 727 you need to know this.

You can't or, shouldn't, inter change any of them .  Each engine was balanced individually with the vibration damper and flywheel/Flex plate mounted to the rotating assembly.
Normally the 360 and 401 does not have the same weight.

after  perusing through this ,im more confused than ever. I've seen pics of 304 flexplates   for 904s and for 727, i was under the impression that 304s were matched with 904s or maybe 998s,from what it looks like the torqueflite (command) would work with either the 727 or 904 maybe the 998, as long as you use the plate that came on the engine (304on 304, 360 on  360,401 on 401 727 or 904 not a factor?
also ,if i was to get an 360 or 401, engine out a jeep, would i just buying a plate for a 360 or  401 for a torque command?
also how do you tell whether    my 74 matador 304 has a 904,998 or 727?

Sorry to jump in here but I'm at a loss.
My issue is I put a automatic transmission in my 66 rambler classic 770 4 door. It came out of a 64 classic 550 2 door. Went to start it and the starter wasn't hitting the torque converter. Pulled the starter back off and noticed the ring gear on the torque converter is smaller then the one from my 66. 66 has a 232 motor. Not sure what was in the 64.  I was told I could put the 64 bell housing on the transmission or put the 66 torque converter on the 64 trans. I was wondering if I could just use the 64 starter.  Or maybe someone here has an idea on what I could do to fix this mess created. Thank you and again. Sorry for jumping into your topic.
