I have used , since 2007, a Holley thick base gasket on my 258 Gremmy with a Cliffy manifold and a 390 Holley. I chose this gasket as it is 1/4 inch thick which helps insulate carb , and may help low end a tiny bit.  Well, Ive been fooled!!!  It has caused me to chase my tail as carb would go rich at idle, then lean, then rich....
So i put a new one on and guess what?  It was bad within 50 miles doing same thing.  Which is allow vacuum to leak past its cheap laminate design no matter how tight it is.  Sorry, I cant find the PN.  But avoid this thing. It is porous out of the wrapper.

Use the phenolic spacer to insulate. Thick gaskets only help in warping carb bases...they are otherwise not worth a lot.

Thumbs Up
i do wonder if any spacing helps tork.  If so, it would be very little im sure at least because were dealing with small motor.  I remember being very surprised on my Pontiac 455.  It gave a seat of the pants improvement.

Its Holley PN 758.  I bought both several years ago.

I used to run a big spacer on my 258. The gaskets that I always used and got good results from where the thin ones. I think they were Mr. Gasket...
