I did a search and didn't see anything on this. The problem it's having is when you turn the key the starter engages and turns the engine just for a split second then just the starter motor turns....I replaced the solenoid same thing, then even when you jump the terminals it does the same thing. Thoughts?

A damaged battery will do it. Had a cracked post or lead plate, which measured proper voltage until a load hit it. I figure your getting voltage until there is a large load from starting, then cut off.

Replace the starter. The drive clutch is bad in it...

If the starter is out and the drive clutch is suspect, then the ring gear should be inspected also.

The Motorcraft starter uses an electromagnet to engage the drive gear. When you energize the starter, the two shoes come together which activates a rocker arm and pushes the drive gear into the flywheel. The starter is spinning very slowly while this is happening to allow the teeth of the drive gear and ring gear to engage. Once the drive gear is fully extended, the starter spins up to full speed. This was observed on the starter in my 78 Merc. I don't think the Motorcraft starters in AMCs would be any different. From the sound of it, the magnate in your starter is not holding the drive gear engaged. You would have to remove the starter and inspect it to discover why. You could simply replace the starter, but the quality of the rebuilt units is not there anymore, so repair of the existing starter (if it is otherwise working well) might be the better solution.

It looks to already been replaced. I'll check the voltage drop before I remove it then I'll put it and put some juice to it, also
