Yeah, that's what we use! A Lakewood bell for an AMC with a T10.

So the T-10 used on 67-71 AMCs had the same tranny bolt-pattern as the GM T-10s? If that's the case, we'll have even more options.

Menace - do you use a SuperFlow? If so, is a flywheel necessary or can the shop jig up a flexplate adapter?

No.  The AMC t10 and the GM T10 do not have the same bolt pattern.  Lakewood manufactures some bellhousings with the correct GM depth and bolt pattern so you could use a GM transmission behind an AMC engine.

Another clarification.

All AMC V8s displacing 290, 304, 343, 360, 390 and 401 cubic inches from the factory have the starter on the U.S. passenger side of the engine.

1. AMC used three distinct engine to bell housing bolt patterns.
     1 -- 1950s-1971 six cylinder
     2 -- 1956-1966 V-8 (AMC Gen1 250/287/327)
     3 -- 1966-91 V-8 (AMC Gen2/2 290/304/343/360/390/401) and 1972-06 six cylinder.
While the bell pattern is the same the bell DEPTH is different -- ~6.5" on the six, ~8" on the V-8.

2. Only the BW used a separate trans and bell. The photos shown in an earlier post are for MANUAL transmission bells, NOT AUTOMATICS. The BW auto used a large round hole in the bell with a round bolt pattern of 6-8 bolts (I forget exact number). Ford "O-Matic" models and FMX are license built versions of the BW M-8. I don't know for sure if they use the same bolt pattern to the bell as the BW or not, but some here have indicated are that they do.

3. AMC autos have AMC specific bells and flex plates. Torque converters and all components EXCEPT THE CASE WITH BELL HOUSING are interchangeable with the manufacturers other components.

The exceptions would be those trannys that full size Jeeps used with an adapter from 66 to the mid 80s. Those are all TH400s, first the "universal" (Buick Nailhead) case model used with the AMC 327, and later a BOP pattern TH-400 used with 360s and 401 in the early 70s. Around 76 the TH400 was cast with the AMC V-8 bell to engine pattern and the adapter eliminated. The AMC case TH400 was used 1976-80. 81+ big Jeeps use an AMC belled TF727.

Adding to what farna wrote, one bell is different in depth than the other manual transmission bells. The multi pattern V8/I6 bell has a different depth than a 4 speed bell. The multi pattern bell fits several trans, I can't remember all of them but two are the SR4  and the BW T5 manual. The multi pattern bell was available in both Jeeps and AMC cars, with V8s and Inline 6s. I acquired one from a 79 304 Spirit AMX for a T5 swap.

The multi-pattern bell is a six cylinder bell. The only V-8 it was used on from the factory was the 1979 304 with four speed -- and that was an SR4!! VERY marginal even for an anemic factory 79 304 in the Spirit body...

2nd question, I noticed there are different part numbers for starter solenoids  manual and automatic. Why, what's the difference?
Thanks! Brad
