I'm gonna float this idea out there again...
For the guys who have fabricated "partial" intakes, and conversions for the old 327's...why couldn't you take ALL of a SBC TPI setup except the lower intake, and then fabricate a lower intake with injector bungs to mate the stock SBC TPI to the 327? The 327 would be easier because there's no coolant passage in the intake...BUT...would it be THAT much harder to make a TPI lower intake for the Gen 2/3 AMC's? We're not exactly reinventing the wheel here...and dollar-wise, I'm betting you could do this for less than half the cost of other MPI setups for AMC. Think about it...you make 2 lower intakes [one with slotted center bolt holes]...and you've covered EVERY AMC V8. Plus, parts are as common and as cheap as a Chevy, because they ARE Chevy parts! So what's NOT to like [other than the GM origins]? |

Why not just use megasquirt. Would probably be cheaper in the long run

For MFI? I rather doubt it. I'm talking Tuned Port, NOT Throttle Body...TPI rather than TBI. |

Megasquit is not throttle body injection

My point is, there are tons of TPI Chevys out there that are 25-30 years old now. Instead of reinventing the wheel, why not just "reinvent" the lower intake...make one for the Gen 1/Rambler V8's, and one for the Gen 2/3 V8's, and enjoy multi-port fuel injection for half the cost of Edelbrock or Holley, PLUS have 50-state parts availability, even in East Bumfuzzle.
What's the flaw in THAT? |

Get creative.
Chevy stuff does NOT adapt to AMC in any economical manner. A Air gap intake and a TPI Chevy intake and electronics are need as donors. A machine shop and good welding equipment is a big help. Chevy stuff never fits an AMC without major surgery because of big bore centerline differences and different bank stagger. Angles at the intake head interface are 10 degrees different and the whole width and height are way different. The last time I investigated this I needed the remains of 4 Chevy TPI intakes and a Torker. A Air gap is a better choice and it is best to use the Chevy as a pattern and fabricate the needed pieces. In the end all that you may have left of the Chevy will be the throttle body, maybe the tubing and the injectors. Any maybe the electronics. |

Exactly. You have to fab up the lower intake manifold...a flange at the heads, a flange tobolt the upper tubes to, and weld in some injector bungs. Because the Gen 1 has no coolant passing thru the intake, that would be the easiest to fab. And it's an "air gap" intake to boot. If you can weld at all and if you can take accurate measurements, it's not really that big a deal. And once you have the Gen 1 lower intake, the Gen2/3 lower is only slightly more complicated...if t you also make it an "air gap" design.
THROW THE #$%&@ CHEVY LOWER INTAKE AWAY...DON'T TRY TO ADAPT IT. THAT WAS MY INITIAL POINT. Use the wire harness. Use the injectors. Use the upper intake tubes. Use the upper plenum and throttle body. JUST FABRICATE THE LOWER INTAKE. Let GM absorb the basic engineering costs of the SYSTEM, and just CHANGE THE LOWER INTAKE WHEN YOU CHANGE ENGINES. I've been following the XRV8 build, and this is less complicated than 95% of what he's already done. |

The issues of bore centerlines are still a issue.
4.4 for the Chevy vs 4.75 for the Nash can. This makes the center throttle body connections dubious without a new center body or new tubing. But if you are really motivated it can be done! A good well equipped prototype machine shop or a fist full of hundred dollar bills helps! |
