My 72 Javelin has a later model 360 in it (I suspect a 73 from a Jeep but I'm not sure) and is missing the A/C compressor bracket, plus the alternator belt doesn't line up. (I think this might be due to the 73 engine having a longer water pump and the alternator bracket being from the original 72 engine and could be fixed with some shims.) I have a compressor and brackets, power steering pump and brackets, and water pump and crank pulleys from an 80s Grand Wagoneer and to avoid pulley and belt alignment problems I'm considering using the alternator mounting setup from an 80s Grand Wagoneer also. I don't have one but I know where I can get one.

I assume that if I do this only an alternator from an 80s Grand Wagoneer will fit, which uses an internal voltage regulator. How difficult is it to retrofit one of these into an earlier AMC that uses an external voltage regulator? If it's relevant I will also be converting the ignition to a GM HEI-based setup which just needs a single full voltage hot wire on the coil to operate.

If I had the alternator bracket in hand I would check this myself, but would the stock externally voltage regulated alternator that is correct for a 72 Javelin fit in the GW alternator bracket? If so then never mind!

Thanks!

Don't see why the 72 alternator would not fit. The 80 Jeep and 72 Javelin both have a 10SI/12SI type case 12/6 o'clock mounts on the 360.
Have used Jeep parts on the front to align mixed bag of parts before with no issues. They are just easier to find.

The only problem with physical fit is that the GW setup has 4 pieces and one braces the back of the alternator for some reason, and there might be a bolt hole for it on the GW-compatible alternator that's missing from the 72 Javelin one. If I leave it out it might be floppy.

On the back of your 72 alternator case there is a bolt hole that is not used. That is the same bolt hole that is used on the GW alternator bracket.
Believe both alternators are physically the same cases for bolt hole positions.

see if you can find the block casting number on top of the block just behind the intake. that will tell you what year block you have and if it is a jeep may have a j before or after the number.

The blocks do not matter as all 360 blocks are the same from a bolting on accessories point of view. They all have the same timing cover also.
It's the crankshafts, accessories, pulley's, water pump shaft length and brackets that changed. And these can be swapped back and forth for the most part. It's getting all the right pieces to align the belts. The full donor GW is a good option.

Had this same issue with my 73 360 that had been pieced together and had the smog pump removed, leaned heavy on Google images of AMC engine compartments and forums like this to get it right.
