    Posted: Sep/12/2022 at 11:52pm
Just wanted to give anyone interested a heads up that I have been working with Addco on doing a front sway bar design for the "small body" AMC's like Gremlin, Hornet, Concord, and Sprit.

Addco currently lists part number 866 to fit this application, but #866 is actually a large body sway bar and fits AMX, Javelin, Matador Etc. so (as we know) will not fit the small body cars being about 2 1/2" too wide for the small body.

I have sent them an 1 1/16" Sprit GT OE sway bar (and a frame bracket as they are unique) to use for development so they are still a way's off from having the design ready, but I will keep the forum posted on progress.

Thanks

They used to offer them in the past. I installed a front and rear bar from them on my 1976 Gremlin X back in the early 80s.

Wanted to post an update on this sway bar project.

Addco sent me a sway bar to test fit on my Gremlin. It needs some tweaking but looks like they are close on the design and fitment. The width looks good for the small body cars, about 2" narrower than an AMX/Javelin bar. The only problems that I see on first article sway bar are, 1) the holes on the ends of the bar for the end links are located 1" - 1 1/8" to far back causing the end links to sit at a sever angle. 2) The end links they sent to me are also too long, but that is an easy fix using a shorter end link.

3) The only other problem was where the sway bar is bent to give clearance to the idler arm. The way that bend is rotated on the sway bar the bar hits the oil pump housing on a V8. This should be an easy correction by changing the rotation on bend program of the sway bar.

I contacted Addco, sent them some pictures of the install and went over the corrections needed with them last month and now waiting for the next step.

Thanks

That's exciting! Any idea what they expect to sell them for? I'll be interested, for sure.

Well indeed... I bought the sway bar they have listed and it did not fit my Concord. They told me I have to send them my stock sway bar back with the one that didn't fit so they can bend it accordingly to my application. Well... I gotta say... I was looking forward to using this bar and when it didn't fit they are forcing me to jump through an extra set of hoops to get a bar that actually fits. Now come to find this out... It makes me think they knew it wouldn't fit but sold it anyway... Thereby sticking me with something I paid them for but can't use. Anyway... As soon as this gets figured out... I'll finally be able to send it back and exchange it for one that fits. I've had this bar sitting in my garage for almost 4 years now too BTW...

Any new information about this??

I still need to send my OEM stock bar and their bar back... THEN get them to bend one according to my OEM sway bar...

If they are producing accurate sway bars based off of the bar you sent them... Then it would make things easier on me to not need to send my OEM sway back...

Thanks.

Dennis , See if you get them to FIX the AMX front sway bar . I have two of them , one was suppose to be a fix but the hits the power steering arm in the front drivers side and does not work. That or they kept sending be the wrong front sway bar. I'm not sure who Mitchell. had make his sway bars I thought it was ADDA CO but it seems not. LRDaum

I do not think that Larry Mitchell used Addco to make the bars he sold.  In his ads he specifically stated that there was an issue with the Addco rear bar mounting, and he tried to get them to change it and they wouldn't, so he had his own design made instead.  Of course, Addco could've made his design also in addition to theirs, but why make two different products for the same car to sell a few dozen of them a year instead of just making his design change?

And Larry was right about the mounting issue with the Addco rear AMX bar; at least what they were selling in the 1970s-80s.  I had a car with their rear bar on it, and when I removed it I saw that just from street use it had the exact issue he said it would -it tore out the metal around the mounting holes at the frame rail.

My issue was with the front Addoco sway bar. An idea where Mitchell got his sway bar?? I always thought Addoco but I seem to be wrong. LRDaum
