I m doing frame up on cj7 bought the half started project need advice.  Has 283 sbc with a t4 tanny.  I have a set of rebuilt diff with 4.88.  Question is will this tranny hold up to the gears and engine or should I swap now before i get the tub on?  new to this frame up build. Thanks

I think you would be better off asking this question in the Jeep or transmission section of the forum.

This may even belong in the FrankenRambler section.

Welcome to the forum.

T4 would be marginal behind most V8's,
283 would probably be OK, but not ideal,

depending what you plan to do with the build.
A T-176 would be a stronger 4speed.

4.88 gears would probably match up better to an overdrive trans like a T5/AX-15/NV3550, etc, depending on use.
Heavy duty NV4500's & NV4600's can fit too, and would stand up to just about anything.

This is the AMC engine section,
there's a Frankenrambler section is for builds with non-AMC engines,
and a Jeep section too.

If you're restoring it, I think CJ-7's came with 4 cylinder 151 Iron Dukes, AMC 258's, or AMC 304 V8's originally.

Are you planning for big tires?
Small tires + 4.88's + no overdrive = not that street friendly.

Good luck

What are your end goals for your rig?  If it’s to just putt around, then you’ll be ok.  As suggested, a T176 is much stronger and can hold a V8 without a problem.  What size rubber?  AMC 20 and 30?  Already have one piece axles in the rear?  I have an 86 CJ that’s been my baby for 24 years. Can probably steer you on a bunch of your build.  It just all depends on what your end goal is.
