It's a good thing you checked the crankshaft as looking at the pictures posted it looked like you could catch a finger nail in that gap.
Do you know what the mark was? I did drive a broken cast crankshaft once. It broke at the rod journal at an angle. The engine was still running and drove it home. Wondered why there was piston slap all of a sudden. When I took the belts off and grabbed the front pulley and it moved up and down on an angle I knew it was not going to be good news. Piston slap was 2 pistons hitting the head. Amazingly the pistons and rods were fine, just the rod bearings and a broken crankshaft. Broke along/between the oil feed holes.
