I'm wanting to swap in a 4.0 from a Jeep into a 258 '80 Spirit. Any particular 4.0 I need to use? I've got plans for it that don't include any of the factory EFI or ignition system.

I used a 95 xj, worked great. I also used the efi, wasn't bad to do actually. Anyway, just usual things past that,
-serpentine water pumps go backwards,
- intake exhaust ports are NOT in line,
-and the 0331 cast heads are prone to cracking '(00 ish jeeps)
- WJ grands are the only ones I think I've heard of mount troubles
- my spirit alternator bracket didn't fit anything and the jeep alternator is externally regulated (in the pcm)
-factory exhaust manifolds are usually cracked

While it's out, swap the pan and pump or just pickup, put a new rear main seal, and get the felpro rubber pan and valve cover gaskets

I used a 1995 XJ engine, too. Assemble the engine with Permatex Right Stuff and it won’t leak a drop. I don’t understand using the engine without the electronics, though. If I were planning to do that, I would stay with the 258 or build a stroker.
